DevelopME Youth was founded in 2018 by Aretha McCarthy, driven by her own struggles with mental health and the clear need for community support. Growing up as the eldest child in her family, Aretha faced significant challenges alone, wrestling with depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide. Her difficulties intensified after the tragic losses of her brother and father in 2017, pushing her mental health to a tipping point.

In her search for help, Aretha encountered a profound lack of understanding and support within her community. A pivotal moment came during a conversation with a family member who advised her to hide her struggles to avoid appearing weak. This advice, though well-intended, made Aretha realize that silence was not the solution. It spurred her determination to create a space where such issues could be openly discussed and addressed.

As Aretha grew closer to her faith, the vision for DevelopME Youth crystallized. The name "DevelopME" emerged from the concept of nurturing the mind, body, and spirit holistically. With the enthusiastic support of three close friends who believed in her vision, the organization was born.

Today, DevelopME Youth is a holistic non-profit organization committed to empowering Black youth and their communities. We provide resources, education, and support to help them thrive and overcome social and economic challenges. Our programs focus on academic achievement, physical and mental well-being, economic growth, and life skills development.
